DIALOG have designed the Southlands Residence in Vancouver, Canada. The Southlands Residence nestles into a mature, heavily vegetated corner internet site in Vancouver’s historical Dunbar-Southlands neighborhood. A year-round fresh water stream divides the irregularly shaped site and the lush basin resulting from extended-standing environmental forces sets the stage for this dramatic residence. The home is developed around the structural grid established by an earlier residence. Whilst remnants of original footings and columns remain, the Southlands Residence reinterprets the competing notions of privacy and exposure facing the properly-travelled location. This is done in component by way of the use of concrete walls in the landscape, meticulous interior millwork objects, and substantial feature skylights.
The access to the private outdoor environment is supplied on the north side of the home by means of an integrated garden storage and potting area. A concrete path crosses over the slow moving water and threads south below the sculpted wooden belly of the property. Where previously the landscape had bounded interior volumes, the developing skin now frames entry into the luscious outside realm.
A perimeter ne2rk of decks covers outside areas and blurs the line among interior and exterior. Surrounding bamboo, rhododendrons, and Japanese maples turn into as much a portion of the interior living places as the client’s cautiously chosen pieces of furniture.
